Modern waste management systems increasingly include processing infrastructure designed to separate materials and treat waste before final disposal.
The Integrated Waste Processing Facility (IWPF) programme introduces this type of engineered infrastructure within Mauritius’ waste management system through two regional facilities currently under development.
These facilities are being implemented under a 27-year Build–Own–Operate concession framework, following an international procurement process. This structure defines the responsibilities for the design, construction and operation of the facilities while ensuring regulatory oversight and environmental compliance.
IWPF facilities are designed to process municipal waste through a combination of Material Recovery Facilities (MRF) and industrial composting systems, enabling:
- mechanical separation of recyclable materials
• controlled treatment of organic waste
• structured management of municipal waste streams through engineered processing systems
By introducing this processing stage, the IWPF programme strengthens waste management infrastructure in Mauritius while supporting material recovery and structured waste treatment.
